Athens Big Fork Trail Maintenance

Author - Barbie Halbert

What a gorgeous weekend we had for trail maintenance on the Athens Big Fork in Arkansas!!  We had a small but spirited crew consisting of Mark Lane, Jenny and Gary Hackman, Barbie Halbert and Mitch. We started out on the South trailhead Saturday morning about 9:30 after we dropped a vehicle at the end.

The trail was actually in excellent condition except for a few water bars that needed some tender loving care. We crossed paths with several backpackers who were very much appreciative of our hard work. We also met a very interesting trail maintenance angel with a gas weed trimmer. His name was George Peterka. On his weekends he goes to different trails and trims them with his gas trimmer. Him and his cute sidekick, Holly. We of course gave him a very big THANK You!! That saved us from having to do any lopping the rest of the way so we could just focus on water bars. It was a absolutely gorgeous day!!

We all got back to camp thoroughly whooped out! Or I was anyway!! We did almost 6 miles of trail work and my phone said 99 floors!! We enjoyed our traditional potluck gathering and spinning of yarn as they say. You know because Mark Lane was there. IYKYK!! Sunday morning was also gorgeous so it was really hard to leave!! Until we meet again ABF!!
