Black Bayou Benton paddle

Five BCOS members braved the heat to paddle from the Old Palmetto boat ramp in Black Bayou Reservoir on Saturday June 13th. Cloud cover and a nice breeze kept the heat bearable. A variety of birds were observed along the way including a string of ducklings. We paddled almost 5 miles into the channels, around the island and back again in just under 2 hours.  Thanks to all who came out to enjoy the good weather.

I missed the boat for this! I didn't see a post on the Facebook page but I would've loved to come. Hope I can catch the next pop up.

Cypress Bayou

Last Sunday May 31st, 7 folks came together to clear the paddle trail from Rt 162 boat launch on Cypress Lake north to the bird nesting area.  This work included trimming low limbs and sawing larger trees blocking the paddle trail. The evening paddle was amazing for the wildlife spotted as we worked.  Beavers, nutria, armadillos, a deer and 3 or 4 gators and one snake.  Also many herons and white egrets were observed at the "bird" trees as we have named them.

Thanks to the six BCOS members and one guest that worked in the heat to make this trail very passable now.  Orange tapes in the trees mark the entrance to the bayou. These are found about 4 tenths of a mile from the Rt 162 bridge. They bare to the right after the stand of tall dead trees in the channel.

Thanks to Jill, Marian, Teresa, Chris,…

Thanks Wayne for putting this project together. We"re currently working with Cypress Black Bayou Recreation Area to get funding for paddle trail signs for this area.

Success at SciPort's Bug Bazaar

The Bayou Chapter had a fantastic time participating in Sci-Port’s Bug Bazaar on April 11, which welcomed more than 1,500 visitors—making it the largest turnout in the event’s history. We were especially encouraged to hear from Sci-Port leadership that community partner exhibits, like ours, received overwhelmingly positive feedback.

A big part of the excitement was the appearance of Coyote Peterson of Brave Wilderness, whose energetic and engaging online videos and passion for wildlife and conservation helped draw a large crowd and amplify messages about caring for the natural world.

Our table stayed busy throughout the entire event, with a steady stream of kids eager to take on the “River Detective” challenge and learn how insects can tell us about water quality.

It was exciting to see so much curiosity and engagement, and even more rewarding to connect with parents about our mission, upcoming outings, and ways to get involved. We…

Refuge Play Area - Phase 2

BCOS volunteers gathered again on March 25 to work on the Children's Play Area at the Red River National Wildlife Refuge.  We added paint, signage, and a roof to the life jacket loaner station.  We also placed fishing poles, fish and PFD's for visitors to use.

The final touches will be refreshing the blue rubber mulch that serves as "water" and modifying the boat for drainage.  We will be replenishing and repairing the site as needed.

Thanks to everyone who has participated.  If you haven't yet, checked out this area, please do so.  We expect other groups to spruce up their assigned areas soon.
