About the event

Community Outreach and Education

National Hunting and Fishing Day (NHFD) is a FREE event that will include fun and informative exhibits on LDWF’s research and conservation efforts, as well as shooting and fishing demonstrations, and many other exhibits related to outdoor adventures!   The Bodcau event will include: • Archery tournament at new 3D archery trail • Electrofishing demonstration • Haydel Youth Duck Calling Contest • Hog Trap Demonstrations • Bull frog catching • BB gun, shotgun, muzzle loader, paintball, archery • Kayaking/canoeing   NHFD is held nationwide on the fourth Saturday of every September to recognize generations of sportsmen and women for their contributions to conservation.   FREE ADMISSION & PARKING   Come join the fun and celebrate the great outdoors!

BCOS participates in several community events each year. We provide personnel, boats, paddles and PFDs to expose others to the joy of paddling. In the past, we’ve put up to 160 men, women and children in boats at this event so all help is appreciated. We always have such a great group of volunteers!

When:  Saturday Sept 28  (event begins at 9 am so need volunteers to get there early around 8:00am)

Where:  Tom Merrill Recreation Area at Bodcau Bayou

Parking/amenities: Parking and launch area TBD

Duration:  Event is 9am – 2pm.

What to bring:  Great attitude! Safety boaters will need all the usual paddle items – PFD, water, snacks. We will also need bank/dock workers to help participants in/out of kayaks and canoes as well as registration workers to sign people in and fit PFDs.

Update from Tammy:

September 28, 2024 is Bodcau's Annual Hunting and Fishing Day.  Please join us as a volunteer to get folks into kayaks and relay our love of paddling and the outdoors.

Volunteer opportunities include having participants sign waivers, selecting and sizing PFD's, queueing up paddlers, and assisting with getting them in and out of boats.  We also need safety boaters in the water to provide basic water safety and paddle instruction and reign in the rough housers.

I'd like us to consider shifts for this event.  It runs from 9am to 2pm.  We get there at 8am to set up but the participants really don't start showing up to paddle until after 10am.

Registration includes getting liability waivers signed, fitting PFDs and answering BCOS membership questions

Set up/Registration Shift 1 - 8am to 10am - 2 people

Registration Shift 2 - 10am to noon - 2-3 people

Registration/Close Shift 3 - noon to 2pm - 2 people

Boat work includes staging kayaks and canoes, helping participants in and out of boats and safety boat duties.  Also providing simple water safety and paddling instruction.

Set up/Boat work Shift 1 - 8am to 10am - 3-4 people

Boat work Shift 2 - 8-10 people

Boat Work/Close Shift 3 - 6-8 people

Of course you are welcome to sign up for more than one shift, but I wanted to give this option for folks that don't want to or can't spend the majority of their day on this event.

Let me know if you can participate.  We have 150+ members in BCOS.  I'm sure we get 25-30 people out to help with this event for a couple of hours.

Thanks!

Tammy.
